Description:

This is a collection of American Railroad "Date Nails" that were used from 1897-1968 to determine the age of the railroad ties used in the construction and updating of the railroad infrastructure. This was the method used to mark and determine the replacement schedule to keep things running. The nails were stamped on the crown with the year (2 digit #) of the placement of the tie. This was universally done throughout the railroad system. As you can see from the picture there are nails from all sorts of railroad spurs .. some have locations tagged.

These nails range in length from a little over an inch up to about 3". They are made from several different metals including copper, iron, steel, ... whatever.

Included is a write up describing the nails in more detail. See pictures.

Also included are some square hand-forged nails found at the demolition site of the old Auburn Ice House across from the Auburn Train Depot back in 1970.
